In December 2024, BIOS received a legacy from the estate of the late Gary Rant. This substantial sum has, of course, been gratefully received. At the last
Council meeting, a discussion ensued as to whether such legacies should be invested or spent furthering BIOS’s aims. We already have adequate funds
available for activities, some of which are held in investments. The publications ‘wing’ of the Institute has generated modest income over various periods of time. The Charities Commission has told organisations such as BIOS that they should set an appropriate investment policy. This implies that large sums of money should not be locked up, but made useful to the aims of the organisation and thus to the economy. At present, BIOS has financial reserves which exceed the need stated in the reserves policy.
