About BIOS
BIOS (The British Institute of Organ Studies) is a registered charity (No. 283936), governed by a Council elected at the Annual General Meeting, typically held in March or April.
The Council oversees subcommittees focused on Publications and the Historic Organ Listing Scheme. Additionally, Council members collaborate in Joint Committees with the University of Birmingham for the British Organ Archive and with The Royal College of Organists for the National Pipe Organ Register.
Aims of BIOS
- To promote objective and scholarly research into the history of the organ and its music in all its aspects, with a particular focus on the organ and its music in Britain.
- To conserve sources and materials related to the history of the organ in Britain, ensuring they are accessible to scholars.
- To advocate for the preservation and, where necessary, the faithful restoration of historic organs in Britain, while encouraging their use and appreciation.
- To support the exchange of scholarship with similar organisations and individuals abroad, and to enhance the appreciation of historical overseas schools of organ-building within Britain.
